Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 25 October 2007

All have the right to a first-class education

HUNTLY Spence thinks that we should have an elitist education for ‘talented’ pupils. (It’s right to recruit talent, October 18).
His attitude to other pupils is summed up in the sentence: “There is no shortage of mediocrity, (that is, the working class), to do the soft options.”
Who does he think the professional classes call on when their lights fuse, their pipes spring a leak, or they need a carpenter?
These are skilled and necessary trades. And without dustmen, carers, bus drivers, and other manual workers, society would collapse.
Certainly we need people with higher education for many of the professional jobs. But a first-class education is the right of every pupil, not just a privileged few.
