Crackdown on seasonal weapons of choice... eggs and fruit

GUNS and knives are obvious dangers, but what about the threat posed by eggs or fruit hurled with deadly precision? Luckily for residents of Kentish Town, police are on the case.
Sgt Peter Ryan, who runs Kentish Town Safer Neighbourhoods team, last week declared a blitz on anti-social behaviour on the streets in the run-up to Halloween.
Residents fear the trick-or-treating tradition is running out of control.
Police said that greengrocers – unaware they were sitting on a deadly “weapons” cache – may be asked to remove potential missiles from their shelves.
“We also hope to crack the egg case,” Sgt Ryan added, referring to the practice of pelting homes. “We have been asked to visit supermarkets and smaller shops and ask them to withdraw their eggs to prevent anti-social behaviour of the kind we have seen before in Highgate Road.”
Community police teams have had leave cancelled to deal with firework nuisance, trick-or-treating that gets out of hand and the frequent upsurge in robberies that accompanies Halloween and Bonfire Night.
Yanni Perivolas, director of Earth Natural Foods in Kentish Town Road, said: “How can you stop someone getting eggs? They say: ‘Mum, can I make an omelette’ and then they go and make an omelette of your house.”
He added: “Pumpkins could be quite a nasty weapon, I suppose, but these kids don’t want organic vegetables – unless they’re eco-hoodies.”
Pat Gibson, secretary of Highgate Road Residents Group, said: “I don’t go out on Halloween so I can’t be mistaken for anything and pelted, but there’s always some kind of anti-social behaviour in Highgate Road.”
Of the police’s plans for an area-wide fruit embargo, she seemed unconvinced. “Let’s hope they don’t end up with egg on their faces,” she added.
