Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 18 October 2007

Our people need homes

• I HAVE always been under the impression that housing associations were formed to help people to obtain affordable housing.
So I was surprised when I saw an advertisement on the internet for a two-bedroom maisonette in a Circle Anglia housing association property in Holborn.
The property was to be rented furnished or unfurnished for £400 per week.
This is not the first flat to be offered for rent privately in this particular street but this flat is suitable for family occupation.
As my daughter has just been told that her son can share her bedroom until he is eight years old I think this is disgraceful.
There must be hundreds of people who need two-bedroom accomodation in this area and this flat seems to have been rented to a group of students.
There is a great danger that this area will become ruined if housing associations start to rent out homes on the private market to groups of people who will club together to pay these types of rent or that they will be let to wealthy people who will only live in them to save having to commute from the suburbs every working day.
Please housing associations concentrate on housing local people in the affordable homes that they need and deserve.
