Boost for Somali GCSE
THE campaign to introduce a Somali language GCSE in Camden schools got a fillip this week when a leading think-tank, the Compass group, backed the idea.
Compass, a left-wing campaigns group which includes leading MPs, has backed the plan and will contact influential members to help boost the campaign.
In Camden schools almost 1,500 pupils are of Somali origin, and a recent study by the British Educational Research Association found their academic attainment below average.
There are also fears that with older members of the Somali community lacking strong English and their children no longer speaking Somali, the community has been cleft in two and this has led to social problems.
Compass general secretary Gavin Hayes said: “It is something we are aware of and believe it would be a positive step.” |
