Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 04 October 2007

Wardens slapped fines on car – and then removed it

• IN answer to Robin Mackay Miller’s question (Why did parking wardens walk past this car? September 27), they didn’t. They issued the car parked in Great Russell Street with several penalty charge notices before removing it on September 22 – five days before Mr Miller’s letter was published.
Despite its appearance, it wasn’t abandoned – it had a valid tax disc. If it had been, it would have been subject to our much-improved services, which have significantly reduced the number of vehicles abandoned on our streets to around 400 last year, compared with 4,000 the year before.
When informed of a suspected abandoned vehicle, we now assess and place a notice of removal on it within 24 hours. If it has clearly been abandoned, we will remove it within 72 hours. We also collect and dispose of old vehicles for free and prosecute those who abandon them.
If you think a car has been abandoned you can report it to the council’s street environment call centre on 020 7974 6914, or online via our website.
Signs to look for include if it has not been moved for some time, doesn’t have a valid tax disc, has missing number plates or looks like it
has been vandalised.
Rudy Bright
Head of parking, Camden Council
