THE Liberal Democrats have completed a hat-trick of victories in Kentish Town with a by-election win.
Candidate Ralph Scott topped the polls on Thursday (yesterday) night to drum Labour out of an area they once regarded as a safe seat.
The Lib Dems now hold all three of the ward seats in Kentish Town having won the other two at elections in May.
Labour candidate Reverend Sam McBratney was defending a lead of just 15 votes and his campaign collapsed in the face of a huge Lib Dem assault. He came third, losing also to the Green Party's Sian Berry. Second place, however, will be scant consolation for Ms Berry, who is now the Green's national principle speaker and at one stage looked like she could become the first Green candidate to win in Kentish Town.
Conservative candidate Richard Merrin had promised that the Tories would make an impact - Kentish Town has never been a fertile ground for his party - but the PR guru could not even scrape 200 votes together.
The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labour's Lucy Anderson. She quit the Town Hall just six months after her party lost overall control to a Lib Dem/Conservative alliance. |
