‘Jail won’t deter knife carriers’ says rapper

MANADATORY sentences for knife crime should be ruled out according to a Tufnell Park rapper – who launches his debut album on Monday.
Matthew Stanton – known by his musical moniker Suparnovar – said: “I don’t know if that’s the answer. Jail can be the worst thing for them, while a mandatory sentence might not stop them (carrying knives). For some kids it’s a badge of honour to go to jail.”
He warned youngsters fearful of jail would leave their blades at home while tougher youths would not be deterred – thus leaving some teens in more danger.
Mr Stanton, 23, who grew up in Brecknock Road estate and went to Acland Burghley School, began rapping at 17.
In October he opened a show for hip hop star Ghostface Killah from American supergroup Wu-Tang Clan. Mr Stanton used to be signed to well-known Finsbury Park rapper Skinnyman’s label – who had a big underground hit with Itchy Town, his nickname for Camden Town, in the late 90s. He will be launching his debut album From the Beginning at the Dublin Castle pub in Camden Town on Monday.
