Decision delayed in row over cycle paths
A DECISION on whether to allow more cycle paths on Hampstead Heath has been postponed until November next year.
Bob Hall, chairman of the Heath’s management committee, made the announcement at a packed, and occasionally heated, public debate on the subject in Hampstead Town Hall on Monday.
Heath guardian the City of London is in the midst of a consultation exercise on the Heath’s management, including cycling, before bringing out its next 10-year management plan. Consultants are now to conduct a separate review of cycle paths.
Cycling campaigners are pushing for six more cycle paths on the Heath. But other Heath users fear cyclists will disrupt its peace and tranquillity.
On Monday, Dr David Fleming from Heath for Feet, a new lobby group, said: “ We trivialise the Heath by using it as a transport route. Unaccountable power corrupts, even when it comes to saving the planet.
“The tyranny of cyclists is reducing the Heath to a pointless speed trap.”
But Meade McCloughan, of Camden Cycling Campaign, said: “There is an overriding need to get more people cycling. London’s roads are congested and public transport is overcrowded." |
