All smiles at opening at £1.7-million face-lift for boys’ club
FORMER boys’ club in King’s Cross is re-opening as a state-of-the-art community centre following a £1.7 million facelift.
The lease of the infamous Tonbridge Club in Cromer Street was bought last year by the YMCA, a charity set up to help the homeless and under-privileged.
Renamed One KX, the striking four-storey corner building, will hold subsidised arts events, education and health projects for King’s Cross residents, according to its new director.
After a year-long restoration, the 10,000 sq ft space has been decked out with a fitness suite, chill-out room, theatre space and quiet areas for classes and workshops.
Centre director Arti Nanda said: “We spent a long time consulting with the community, particularly young people, to find out what sort of provisions they felt was needed.
“We want to provide affordable health, arts and education provision for the people of this area.” King’s Cross councillor Jonathan Simpson said the centre was “magnificent” for King’s Cross. |
