Greens woo defectors

GREEN Party candidate Sian Berry reckons long-term Labour voters are tearing up membership cards to support her in the Kentish Town by-election.
She said the message on the doorstep was that Labour had let down its once-loyal supporters.
Ms Berry, now one of her party’s principal speakers at a national level, turned up the heat on Saturday when she went door-knocking with human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.
She said: “He proved particularly effective in convincing long-term Labour voters to switch from the party that has abandoned them and their principles.”
Once a Labour election candidate, Mr Tatchell joined the Greens in 2004. He said: “Electing Sian will have a real impact on the council. Labour has abandoned many of its principles. Instead of delivering high-quality public services, the government is promoting back-door privatisation in health and education.
“Labour backs the war in Iraq and stands accused of trading cash for peerages. Greens put the common good before corporate greed, and the public interest before private profit.”
