Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published 30 November 2006

Private risk to GPs surgeries

• SO, the privatisation of healthcare has now arrived in GP surgeries in Camden (US firms in picture to run GP surgeries, Nov 23).
The independent contractor status of GPs sadly leaves the door wide open for large corporations to take over surgeries, as is now being considered by Camden PCT.
Giving three-year contracts to profit-seeking private companies can only worsen our service and our health. The comparison to the march of supermarkets on our local, independent shops is apt.
Clearly not wanted or needed, big corporations are driven by profit not public duty, and yet the Labour government is bringing them into health care faster than ever.
Just as frustrating is the lack of opposition by the Lib Dems or Tories to this sell-off.
SIAN BERRY
