Bus stop bust up between greens and City Hall

PLANS to extend a bus stand in the centre of Highgate Village received a thumbs-down from Town Hall environment chiefs on Tuesday.
Camden’s environment supremo, Conservative councillor Mike Greene, called the Transport for London (TfL) proposal “illogical”. He has now postponed a decision on the future of the stand.
TfL’s proposal is to redesign the existing No 271 bus stand in South Grove which it says is in poor repair and unsuitable for disabled passengers. TfL has suggested narrowing the current stand and shifting one of the buses to a new stand created on the other side of the Grove.
But the plans have been condemned by the Highgate Society as unsafe and likely to increase congestion.
The Society has sent bus chiefs an alternative proposal, accompanied by a 700-signature petition, which will involve extending the 271 service to East Finchley or the Wellington roundabout and moving the stand away from Highgate Village. But the proposal has so far been dismissed by TfL as “unviable”.
A TfL spokesman said: “We have reviewed the suggestions for extending route 271 but considered that they would largely double up sections of the existing route 143.”
