Svenja leads Metro League pacesetters

HIGHGATE Harriers women’s team stretched their lead at the top of the Metropolitan Cross-Country League on Saturday with victory at Ruislip.
Leading Harrier Svenja Abel outpaced a field of 114 runners as she clinched first place with a winning time of 20 minutes, 20 seconds.
Highgate continued to dominate the top order with Esther Evans finishing third, while Middlesex champion Sula Young took fourth place.
Top ten finishes from Henry Dodwell and Glen Saqui helped the Highgate men’s team move up a place in their league.

HIGHGATE’S Damian Shirley competed alongside thousands of runners in the Frankfurt Marathon at the weekend.
The New Zealander recorded an impressive time of two hours, 59mins and 16secs to finish in 292nd place overall.

HEATHSIDES women’s team put on an impressive display in the Metropolitan League.
On only the second fixture of the new campaign, Heathside have already had more women turn out for cross-country than they had for the whole of last winter. Anna Critchlow led the Heathside contingent as she came ninth with a time of 22mins, 19secs. Jo King was just seven seconds behind in tenth place, while Vanessa Parry also ran well.
Teenage starlet Ella Waldman, 15, had a brilliant race as sealed a top 30 finish with a time of 23mins, 49secs. In the end Heathside finished second with 683 points, behind winners Highgate who notched up a score of 760.
A poor turnout saw the men’s Heathside team struggle for points as they finished in eighth place. Rob Cousins was the star performer on the day as he finished third with a time of 27mins, 42secs.
