DNA snares rapist after five years

A RAPIST who evaded police for more than five years until a DNA match led to his arrest has been jailed.
Duncan James Empson, 32, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday to eight years and three months for sexually assaulting a woman in Bloomsbury in August 2000. Empson, of Reading, followed the woman after she left the Black Horse pub in Rathbone Place alone to get money from a cash machine.
The court heard Empson and another man who has never been identified raped her and left her in the alley. Empson was not caught until he gave a DNA sample to police following his arrest for assault in December 2005. Police arrested him on March 16 and took him to Holborn police station where he was charged, before appearing at Highbury Magistrates’ Court the following day.
He pleaded guilty to rape on June 2.
