Fireworks can be enjoyed safely
• THE firework display on Primrose Hill used to be a very popular annual event.
A safe and sociable opportunity for everyone to enjoy fireworks.
Then the council took control and closed it down on the pretext that it was too crowded and too expensive.
This year, I see notices have been posted at the park gates stating that fireworks are prohibited "by order of the Secretary of State".
I assume this is a euphemism for the Royal Parks management. Since fireworks are not yet illegal, this seems like a step backwards for both safety and common sense.
In an area where most people do not have private gardens, isn't the park a better location for letting off fireworks than the pavement?
Better still, bring back an organised display that allows us all to enjoy fireworks safely. If Primrose Hill is too small, what about Regent's Park? It would be a minor undertaking compared with events like the Frieze Art Fair and Fruitstock. If the cost is an issue, or an excuse, how hard would it be to find a commercial sponsor?
