Union in warning over schools’ private funding
A SECONDARY school has lost the right to make simple decisions about the way it is run because it used private finance to refurbish its grounds, say unions.
The warning came as the Town Hall confirmed it was considering using a City Academy model for a new school in Swiss Cottage and drawing up Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) to refurbish Camden’s existing schools.
Haverstock School in Haverstock Hill, Chalk Farm is currently the only PFI school in the borough and lost control of the site in its deal with Japanese contractors Kajima.
Andrew Baisley, from the National Union of Teachers, said: “When the council wanted to move to healthy eating in schools last year, Haverstock didn’t participate – it’s been tendered out for 20 years. PFIs tie you in to contracts that can have unforeseen circumstances.”
The Lib Dem-Tory coalition has agreed to embark on a new school in Adelaide Road, Swiss Cottage. Councillors have asked for £200million of government money to fund the scheme.
