Harriers sail to victory

HIGHGATE Harriers women’s team sealed their third successive win on Saturday as they sailed to victory in their opening Metropolitan Cross Country League fixture, which was held at St Albans.
Svenja Abel overcame competition from a field of 140 runners to clinch first place with a winning time of 21 minutes, 59 seconds.
There were also good runs from Esther Evans and Astrid Wingler as the Harriers took an early lead at the top of the table.
Athletes from London Heathside were also out in force at St Albans as they got their league campaign off and running.
Among the Heathside star performers were Jo King and Vanessa Parry, who finished in 9th and 16th place respectively in the senior women’s event. Felicity Smith was also in outstanding form as Heathside women’s team finished in fourth place overall.
Meanwhile in the men’s event, strong performances from Paul Lemmon and Martin Potter saw Heathside get the upper hand against Highgate as they finished in fourth place. Highgate had to settle for fifth place overall out of the 29 clubs that took part.
