Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published 5 October 2006

Debate on views of faith

I WAS very interested to read about Peter Lumsden and his different visions on Christianity in your newspaper (Speaking out for power of debate, September 28).
I have held similar views for at least the last 30 years. Unlike Mr Lumsden I have kept my mouth shut (Jesus blabbed and look what happened to him).
On the odd occasion when I’ve said something controversial it’s usually to a devout Christian who then berates me quite severely and I’m lucky to get away with my life.
One of my most controversial thoughts is that when Jesus ‘died for our sins’ what he actually meant was for the sins committed up to that moment in time – ‘wiping the slate clean’ but not for all time. It just doesn’t make sense to me that God would give Man free will and then say any sins you commit will be forgiven. In fact, a lot of the Bible is very contradictory.
I shall venture down to Speakers’ Corner and seek Mr Lumsden out to share my thoughts in the knowledge that I won’t be told I need locking up.
