Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published 5 October 2006

Youth protest attack is clouding the issue

WE read with interest Councillor Keith Sedgewick’s criticism of the Labour Party for allegedly encouraging young people to protest at the council meeting about the cuts in funding for youth work.
Can this be the same Cllr Sedgewick who heckled us from the floor of a council meeting earlier this year when we were part of a delegation about the cutting of funding to youth services in his very own ward? Fortunately the mayor cut him off in mid rant.
The ‘organised’ attack by the ruling Conservative and Lib Dem parties against Labour’s alleged encouragement of young people to protest is an attempt to divert us from the main issue.
This is the reduction in youth provision in those very areas, like King’s Cross and Gospel Oak, where it is most needed.
In Gospel Oak we have lost two thirds of our provision at the Community Centre.
We asked for discussions in June with Councillor John Bryant (the executive member for young people) about this but despite promises for a meeting this has not transpired.
