Camden New Journal - CARLING CUP ROUND UP by STEVE BARNETT
Published: 27 September 2007

Young Gunners call the Toon

TWO late goals capped a confident display by Arsenal’s youngsters on Tuesday as they comfortably saw off a near full-strength Newcastle side at the Emirates.
After a low-key first half of few chances for either side, Arsenal tore into the Magpies after the restart, with Theo Walcott and Armand Traore a constant menace on the wings, and Eduardo and Nicklas Bendtner forging a good partnership in attack.
Bendtner had taken a while to get going – his first touch a little heavy at times – but the powerful Danish striker made no mistake on 84 minutes with a bullet header, following a pinpoint left-side cross from Traore.
Obafemi Martins should have equalised a minute later, after rounding keeper Lukasz Fabianski, but Senderos cleared his tame shot off the line.
The Gunners were to make the Geordies pay. Sub Abou Diaby found Denilson, who scored a spectacular second when he let loose with a rocket from 25 yards to round off a superb victory.
The impressive Diaby almost made it three in the dying seconds, only to be denied by Given.

Spurs ease into round four

SPURS cruised into the fourth round of the Carling Cup last night (Wednesday) with a 2-0 victory at White Hart Lane over Middlesbrough.
Spurs started well, Jermain Defoe, Gareth Bale, and Michael Dawson all cominge close. Boro survived until half time but Tottenham began to build up the pressure with half an hour to go. The 65th-minute swap of Defoe for Keane proved to be inspired. Keane had been on the pitch for just four minutes when he carried the ball out of defence, created space for Gareth Bale, who rounded Boro keeper Brad Jones to put Spurs one up. Three minutes later a long ball from Paul Robinson found Lennon in space.
His precise cross left Tom Huddlestone with a simple headed finish.
