There’s growing interest from young gardeners at horticultural society show

JUICY fruits and enormous turnips were lined up for judgment on Saturday for the Highgate Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show.
Proud gardeners showed off the produce from their vegetable patches while keen florists mounted a colourful display of blooms during a day of home-made fun at the Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution.
There was something for everyone as a much younger crowd got stuck in with a colourful mask-making contest.
On the culinary side, fresh cakes, fruit preserves and pickles were on offer to satisfy every tastebud.
And for those who just came to enjoy the show, home-made tea and a raffle ensured everyone was included.
Awards were given to the most impressive displays, and a select group of competition winners went home with cups.
Honorary secretary Roxanne Stirling said: “The day was brilliant. We had over 200 entries and lots of lovely children’s entries this time, which was smashing.
“The teas, plant and produce stalls did really well, which helped pay for the show. We had a great auction at the end where people offered up for sale their exhibits. It was such a fun day.”
