Suggs hands out green prizes

MADNESS star Suggs was the special guest as green-fingered gardeners were rewarded for their hard work at a prize-giving ceremony on Tuesday night.
The baggy-trousered singer handed out the awards at the ninth annual Gospel Oak housing office gardening competition before fielding questions from the audience.
Suggs, who came runner-up in a similar competition with his wife two years ago, said gardening was a good way to bring the community together.
He said: “The environment is very important, especially in estates where there’s very little green space. It’s important that they’re cared for and local people are involved in their environment.”
The evening, held at the Clarence Way estate, saw prizes handed out for best communal garden, best window box, best wildlife care, best individual garden and best balcony.
Kate Spencer and Eileen Yates romped home with first prize in the communal garden category – for the second year running – for their handywork at Cayford House in Hampstead.
Ms Spencer said: “We have a very unique block. We all know each other and we all look after each other.”
Ms Yates said: “We all love to sit in the garden and have a cup of tea.”
Celia Aherne, from the Penshurst estate in Gospel Oak, won first prize for the best window box for her efforts on a communal balcony.
“The neighbours call it ‘the village’,” she said.
