Tower Theatre celebrates 75 years in style with £1m cash boost

THE Tower Theatre Company celebrated its 75th birthday in style on Saturday announcing a £1 million cash boost.
The non-professional company – that has included celebrated actors Michael Gambon, Sian Phillips and Tom Courtenay – won a legal settlement after they were unfairly evicted from their home in Canonbury Place, Islington.
In 2001 the company lost the lease to its historic home after a clerical mix-up.
It meant the 300-strong company was exiled to temporary venues including the Bridewell Theatre off Fleet Street and Theatro Technis in Somers Town while a six-year legal battle raged.
Spokeswoman Zizi Sulkin said: “We lost our home at the Tower Theatre after more than 50 years because, due to reasons beyond our control, we were unable to renew our lease there.”
The company are now viewing sites across London to build a new permanent home. The windfall meant the birthday celebrations were not only nostalgic, but also optimistic, with the company’s future now secured.
The event in the Canal Museum, King’s Cross, included a champagne reception, three-course meal, a raffle and table-side magic and cabaret performances.
