Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 27 September 2007

Full story of Kiln Place

• YOUR story (Election vow is unachievable, September 20) about the heating system at Kiln Place, which re-hashed a story you have run before, did not give the full picture.
As Kiln Place residents chairman Maggie Smith wrote in the CNJ on July 19 2007, Labour had ignored the freezing cold residents of Kiln Place for 10 years, despite their pleas that that their heating system did not work. Residents told how ice formed on the inside of windows and mould was rampant. The Conservatives pledged that we would find the money for a new system if elected.
Within just 10 weeks of being elected, my colleagues and I found that money, and the preparatory work on the new system started immediately.
The 135 tenants of Kiln Place will get this heating completely free of charge. My colleagues and I have also campaigned very vigorously indeed for the 30 or so leaseholders not to be charged or to be given an opt-out.
However, this did not eventually prove possible, although innovative options to delay or spread the payments have been introduced. The main point is that Labour ignored the pleas of these freezing cold council residents for 10 long years. Theo Blackwell and his pals in the Camden Labour Party should be ashamed of themselves. We found the money within 10 weeks, even though the previous Labour council leader was quoted in the CNJ as saying that it could not be done. I am very proud that we achieved in ten weeks what Labour failed to do in 10 years. Most importantly, about 400 council residents will not now be freezing cold.
Cllr Chris Philp
Conservative, Gospel Oak
