Lines are drawn in Brixton tram link controversy

A SURVEY revealing popular support for a tram linking Brixton with Camden Town has been attacked by protesters who insist it could ‘destroy’ Somers Town.
The Cross River Tram scheme, heavily backed by Mayor Ken Livingstone, would join Camden Town with Euston, King’s Cross, Waterloo and Brixton by 2016 if financial and planning support can be found.
But the route through Camden is still under discussion and was the subject of a Transport for London survey in February, the results of which were published last week and showed a popular preference for links up Camden High Street and through Somers Town.
Sixty-five per cent of respondents said the Euston station to Camden Town leg of the route should travel up Camden High Street. But the survey’s findings have infuriated Somers Town councillor Roger Robinson, who continued to insist this week that there was “100 per cent opposition among local people” to the Brill Place route, claiming it will endanger schoolchildren and require the demolition of vital community buildings.
