Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 September 2007

Means-test threat to vulnerable

• THIS is a copy of a letter I sent to my local councillor regarding the cuts and means testing of the elderly by Camden Council.
I do a bit of part-time health and social care work.
The new Camden administration are now charging the elderly and vulnerable adults after a humiliating and intrusive means-testing for their care package.
I understand quite a number of elderly have given up the service which in some cases costs up to £50 a week.
This will surely put them at greater risk if they give it up.
Indeed one of my own “service users” is being charged £36 a week on a very modest income which includes his attendance allowance and he is thinking the same way.
I think it an absolute disgrace and while we are asked as care workers to rightly observe POVA (protection of vulnerable adults) the council and governmental powers are obviously not – by causing grave distress and in some situations may hasten death through neglect or accident due to cuts.
Why not raise that at the next council meeting?
Looks like the new administration is hammering everyone for money… my council tax issue, care charges… what next?
Plenty of money for wars though!
