Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 20 September 2007

On track to keep our manifesto pledge

• I VOTED to push ahead with public consultation on the new UCL academy.
This was a key Liberal Democrat manifesto pledge, and it’s great that we are on track to keep another of our election promises.
More puzzling is that Camden Labour are opposing what looks set to become one of the best schools in the country. Their idea for an “open competition”, bound by the government’s rules, would, in fact, pass decisions over the school from elected councillors in Camden to an unelected government adjudicator based in Darlington. No doubt Camden Labour have their own reasons for wanting to freeze local people out of the discussions. But many of us firmly believe that decisions about the future of Camden should be take in Camden.
I very much hope that lots of residents will now join the consultation process and tell us about how they want their new school to operate.
