IT is well known that the New Journal provides blanket coverage – but now a Highgate artist has proved.
Cesa Milton, who lives in Brookfield Mansionits, Highgate West Hill, has patented a new technique in newspaper recycling. Shredding old papers and then applying glue to the strands, she created a form of paper wool. Using the New Journal, she has knitted herself a blanket to keep the coming winter chills at bay.
She explains: “As an artist, I want to use materials that do not cost money and I collect the New Journal each week, so I thought I’d put it to a new use once I’d finished reading it.”
Knitted into 70 squares, Cesa has used a traditional knitting technique with a twist.
After saving up back copies of her favourite newspaper the project took her two weeks to complete.
She added: “I do not know anyone else who has done this before. I did it really to show how you can make beautiful objects with discarded materials.”
The blanket, which fits a single bed, is also fit for its purpose.
She added: “It is well insulated and as warm as a woolly cover. I’m pleased with the outcome.”
