Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 September 2007

Enough of celebrities

• I AM sick to death of celebrities, who think, because they have made a lot of money, that they have the right to run our lives.
Tanita Tikaram (Pop stars wants a sober twist for ‘noisy’ pub, September 6), should stick to her job of entertaining us, not preaching to us about what we can or cannot do.
I know and use The Queens, in Primrose Hill, which is just trying to cater for its clientele. It is a busy and lively pub, and people do stand on the pavement but are generally pleasant and friendly. Smoking is not illegal, and, I think (as a non-smoker) that the ban is totally over the top; now the only pubs that will survive will probably be expensive gastro-pubs where presumably people behave in a “desirable” way.
Celebrity objections to people having fun at the Kenwood Concerts, as if they own Hampstead Heath, has led to them being stopped. It is quite outrageous that a few rich celebrities should have this kind of influence, when these concerts have been entertaining large numbers of Londoners for many years without any problems.
Of course there are crowds, but that is part of city life. Presumably the celebrities would not object to crowds if they were paying inflated prices to see them perform!
Maybe Tanita Tikaram and other celebrities should take themselves off to some gated community which cuts itself off from the rest of the world, if people enjoying themselves together is so “undesirable”.
Who does she think she is for goodness sake?
