Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 13 September 2007

And yes, we do have to wear ear plugs

WE all know that Camden and London is a busy place to live and therefore can be noisy.
It’s one of the down sides of living in a busy city.
However, Camden Council should not just concentrate on stopping loud parties. Its noise pollution team should have a serious word with its transport department.
I live in Camden Park Road and for three nights I have had a disturbed night sleep with roadworks beginning on Camden Road at 11pm. Yes, 11pm!! This has resulted in massive traffic jams and lots of angry drivers honking their car horns very loudly until nearly midnight.
This woke not only me, but my partner and our one-year-old baby.
Who thought it would be a good idea to carry out this work during the weekend at a time when most people are going to bed? Plus all these roads are very busy at that time. What is wrong with first thing Sunday morning, when they are empty?
I don’t think Camden Council takes traffic noise pollution very seriously.
We are constantly woken up by police and ambulance sirens every night, which seem to be getting louder. Why not have different day sirens and night sirens? Also, the way lorries crash over the speed bumps causes a racket and sometimes even shakes the flat.
And yes we do wear ear plugs.
To make Camden and London a better place to live, I think central and local government needs to very sensible policies to limit noise and light pollution.
At the moment, it does not seem to be a consideration at all.
SEAN SINGLETON,
