Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 September 2007

Think of shoppers in this battle of the No 393 route

• IT seems like a relentless battle between those who feel comfortable with the 393 bus route through Leighton Road and those who stand so strongly against it.
It’s nice to see a group of neighbours being persistent on how they feel about a bus going down their road; to some degree anyway.
Personally, I welcome the 393 through Leighton Road.
In fact, I’m on Leighton Crescent (which is off of Leighton Grove).
The stop coming from Morrison’s is at the top of Leighton Road; saves a fair bit of travel when I’m coming back with a load of heavy groceries.
I’m quite sure that I’m not the only person that’s closer to Leighton Road than, say, Agar Grove or North Road that feels the same way.
To ponder about taxation (Letters, So Costly, August 30) is quite ‘out-of-the-loop’.
It serves no purpose to worry about such things, one way or another. Yes, there is money that gets allocated to the 393 bus route from Transport for London (TfL). In fact, all routes get money.
It seems as though that the residents of Leighton Road only take into consideration the very minor details of the situation (or what seems obvious). There was most likely a very logical explanation as to why they chose this route. Sure, the road is narrow (as if there are no other routes that travel through very narrow roads).
TfL doesn’t just randomly choose its route with a game of billiards or a game of darts on a map of the location.
I’ve yet to see much congestion based on the 393 route’s path through Leighton Road (and yes, I do walk it a fair bit during peak times).
The only problem could be around 4pm-6pm, but wait, that happens every day with or without a bus going through Leighton Road.
People haven’t thought about those who do their shopping at Morrison’s instead of the more local areas. Before people start suggesting I go to Tesco’s (Camden or Kentish Town), Co-Op, Somerville, or Iceland – they should be aware that Morrison’s grocery is the cheapest out of the lot.
There are handicapped/ disabled/ elderly persons living very close to Leighton Road who have utilised the 393 route as often as they can so far.
People need to look at the wider picture and not the details that don’t matter.
Why are buses placed there to begin with? Should the elderly be forced to walk through the 393 route? I’m sure any GP would say that carrying excessive weight for a time strains muscles and can cause long-term problems.
There are bound to be a number of people in my area who think the 393 is an awesome route – because it goes through Leighton Road.
