Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 September 2007

Chance to take a stand in support of the Palestinian people

• CAMDEN councillors have the opportunity next Monday to take a stand in support of the beleaguered Palestinian people.
They are being asked to welcome the work of Camden Abu Dis Friendship Association which promotes links between Camden and Abu Dis a suburb of East Jerusalem cut off from the city by the 8ft high ‘security’ wall. While all London residents can get to schools and hospitals and universities in Camden, the same is not true for the people of East Jerusalem, wanting to go to and fro within Palestinian occupied territories.
As a Jew I would like to emphasise that CADFA is neither anti-Israeli nor anti-semitic.
I don’t think British people are fully aware of the degree to which Israeli people are horrified by the dismembering of the West Bank, the severing one community from another other and from the outside world.
A public opinion poll in June 2007 published in Yedioth Ahronoth, a mass circulation paper, found 40 per cent of Israelis supporting the end to the occupation and the return of East Jerusalem to Palestine. Many recognise that peace for Israel requires support for non violent initiatives like those of Camden Abu-Dis.
If councillors want to see good relations between the various communities in Camden, they should support this resolution.
