Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 6 September 2007

Providing Careline at a reasonable rate

YOUR Comment piece on Careline (August 30) and the excellent service it provides was interesting.
I
too believe Careline is a vital safety net that provides peace of mind for Camden’s elderly and vulnerable residents. I want to ensure it remains so and is also available for all residents to use, should they need it.
The money we get from the government to run the service is very limited. We do put council tax payers’ money in, but we have always had to pass on the cost of the service to residents.
By using a specialist emergency call-handling service, we will make savings by spreading the cost of call-handling with other similar schemes across the country.
That means more money to spend on the heart of the service – care staff going out to residents’ homes in emergencies. And just as importantly, we can continue to provide Careline at a reasonable and affordable rate to vulnerable and elderly Camden residents.
CLLR MARTIN DAVIES
executive member for adult social care and health Camden Council
