Moroccan merriment marks the start of hospice fundraising bid

A HAMPSTEAD hospice was touched by the exotic – including belly dancers and fresh leaf mint tea – on Thursday when patients were transported to Morocco for the day.
But inhabitants of the Marie Curie hospice in Lyndhurst Gardens did not fly there on magic carpets – instead all the sights, sounds and smells of a traditional Bedouin tent were brought to them as hospice workers launched a fundraising drive to trek to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.
In October 2008 more than 40 trekkers will make the climb in a bid to raise part of the £3.4million needed to give the centre a vital make-over.
The hospice, which treated more than 550 patients last year, is mainly run on donations and only 30 per cent of its budget is funded by the NHS.
Hospice fundraising manager Liz Allen said: “The planned refurbishment is vital – basic improvements such as putting in double glazing and upgrading all the patient rooms will enable us to continue caring for cancer patients and their families for many years to come.”
