Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 August 2007

Pool fight must go on

• COUNCILLOR Philip Thompson campaigned tirelessly to save the Kentish Town swimming baths and must have our gratitude (Gripes and moans, August 23).
However, this campaign was also won thanks to the excellent press coverage and numerous letters in the New Journal and a petition signed by not less than 8,000 residents.
Why are major decisions about the baths now being made by a handful of people who have meetings which are not widely advertised?
The last such took place at the height of the summer holiday, on the evening of the July 19, at the Kentish Town Library and was announced in the CNJ on the same day. Many who might have liked to contribute found out about it too late.
When vast sums of money are being spent on a huge project, then the consultation should have been borough-wide.
P Baker (Letters, August 23) made a good suggestion that a simple questionnaire be published in the CNJ, which is well read borough-wide, to get the right answers rather than rely on the architects and designers to tell us what it is that we want simply because it might suit their purpose.
Cllr Thompson is, in my opinion, unwise when he suggests that any issues regarding changing and showering arrangements can be dealt with at a later date.
Having won the campaign to save the baths, must we rely on the same power of persuasion to get the coalition to listen.
