Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 30 August 2007

Joining up the policy on homes

THE New Journal deserves the congratulations of all Camden citizens for its campaigning journalism on Brill Place (Library site in hands of Town Hall, August 16).
As you pointed out in your editorial, it has been the CNJ that has been trying to ‘join up’ the work of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (which owns the site) and that of Camden Council.
Despite all the buck-passing between the culture secretary, the Prime Minister and the housing minister, it is clear that the ball is in Camden Council’s court.
It is in the council’s power to ensure that the site is used to build social housing for local people.
As your correspondents said last week, we don’t need any more hotels or offices in Somers Town, we have plenty of them – and thanks to the previous New Labour administration’s capitulation to developers we are going to have lots more next door in the King’s Cross development.
What local people want, and desperately need, are many more affordable homes.
You quote the council’s housing chief, Councillor Chris Naylor, as saying that the administration is keen to build new homes, and that given the opportunity would build council homes on Brill Place.
He now has that opportunity, and the thousands on the council’s housing waiting list will hold him to his word.
