New police community officers are delayed

RECRUITMENT backlogs have delayed the arrival of new community police officers who were intended to be the centrepiece of a crackdown on crime.
Funding for 18 Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to patrol Camden’s markets and busy tourist centre this summer was announced by Lib Dem community safety chief Councillor Ben Rawlings in April.
The Met agreed to reinforce the team to provide 30 PCSOs to create a strong visible presence as part of a drive to tackle aggressive drug dealers and their clients.
Although they were originally intended to be on the streets in June to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour associated with increased tourist flows and long evenings, the full team will not be available until October 22.
Nine new PCSOs will take to the streets today (Thursday), but only to complete their training.
There are currently 14 PCSOs patrolling Camden Town, compared to 10 before the £300,000 funding increase was announced.
