Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 August 2007

Reject more luxury homes

• IT is now urgent that action is taken to stop the land behind the British Library in Somers Town being sold off to the highest bidder.
It is clear that people in this area don’t need more hotels, luxury houses or offices, we have plenty of them.
We need more council housing so our children don’t have to leave the area to find somewhere else to live.
We need places for kids to go; we need shops aimed at local people not just at tourists.
Now we have a large plot of land owned by the government on our doorstep that is no longer needed as a building site and that could be put to all of these uses.
Both Frank Dobson MP and councillor Roger Robinson, as well as the residents have called for the site to be kept in public hands.
This is a test for Gordon Brown’s promises to build more social housing. He should intervene to stop the government Department for Culture, Media and Sport going ahead with the private sale.
Camden Council also has to act now to make sure that this opportunity for local people isn’t thrown away as many believe the King’s Cross development has been.
I would urge to the residents of Somers Town to get together and decide what we want on the site and on the action we should take to force the government and the council to act now.
