Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 August 2007

Late for political partying?

• THANK you for your article on the proposal by Camden Council to serve alcohol until 4am at weekends at their Camden Centre venue (Party plans upset neighbours, August 9).
Like many residents in King’s Cross we were astonished that the council would propose serving alcohol till 4am in the middle of a residential area.
The Camden Centre currently causes considerable disruption for people living in the surrounding streets – particularly with the people setting up and leaving events.
Many families live in this area and they deserve a good night’s sleep without Camden Council’s venue keeping them awake till the early hours.
We would have hoped that Camden Council, as the licensing authority, would have a far more responsible attitude to running a venue and would do its utmost to be a good neighbour before even considering extending its drinking hours. It does make Camden’s good record on licensing issues seem a bit hollow when they are proposing such late drinking hours at a venue they run.
We have contacted the manager of the Camden Centre and fed back the considerable opposition to these proposals from King’s Cross residents that we obtained.
We are pleased that the proposals appear to have been put on hold at present because of this opposition.
We will continue to monitor how the Camden Centre is managed over the coming months.
