Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 23 August 2007

Our debt to the older generation

• ANDY Higgins talked about cuts in the grant given to the Irish elderly network (Grant cut just a start, August 2).
In the overall scheme of the council’s budget, £8,000 may seem a small sum but, in effect, it means a cut in advice workers’ time, therefore denying help to elders with significant need.
Has the new administration forgotten the debt we owe to all our older generation?
They kept this country free for us so that we could grow up without the dictatorships seen in other lands.
We gained good health care and education, provided by their taxes and the sweat of their labour.
The Irish, like other economic immigrants, helped the indigenous population to rebuild London and worked in the services to help make it the flourishing economy that it is today.
The Liberal Democrat/ Tory coalition have cut funding to the Greater London Pensioners’ Association and raised the cost of meals for our elderly.
I ask the executive to look again at these decisions and basically respect your elders.
We owe them a debt of gratitude. To the coalition backbenchers, have courage, support your elderly and vulnerable, and challenge decisions like these in the next budget.
