Peter Nichol in action
Peter squashes court abilities into business

Britain’s leading squash player tells Jane Wild that his years of playing sport will help him in the world of business

HE was the world’s number one squash player, and now at the age of 33, Peter Nicol is embarking on a new learning process – by going into business.
He founded Eventis Sports Marketing with fellow squash players Tim Garner and Angus Kirkland a few years ago, and when he retires from squash in three weeks, Peter will run the company full time.
It stages major sporting events, and last year launched the World Squash Awards in London.
Mr Nichol broke records by becoming the first ever Briton to reach the world number one spot in 1998.
He has had a glittering career, winning top titles around the world, and was awarded an MBE by the Queen in 1999.
Born in Scotland, he also caused controversy in the sports world after he switched allegiance across the River Tweed from Scotland to England in 2001.
Mr Nichol, who has lived in West Hampstead since moving to London, says: “There’s so much to learn – I’m a complete novice. My role is to find sponsors, raise revenues, and to be the face of the company.”
But he believes some of the qualities needed are transferable from the squash court.
He says: “A lot is about being very honest and open, understanding what you need and expanding on that.
“It’s exactly the same as being a squash player.
“I think it’s about understanding your goals, making constant evaluation, and learning from that every time.”
