Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:16 August 2007

Remember the safety of cyclists

• I WANTED to add my voice to the chorus which I’m sure you have heard calling for improvements (preferably major ones) to the Swiss Cottage gyratory system to accommodate cyclists.
I am a fairly typical London cyclist, and am used to often nerve-wracking traffic systems, tight roads with buses on them, fast roads with buses on them, and complicated right-turns. Obviously I recognise that we all have to use the same roads and I don’t personally see that cyclists should get special privileges over drivers.
Likewise using the gyratory is not quite as terrifying as trying to turn east onto Oxford Street from Park Lane, for example.
On the other hand, anyone will recognise that cycling across five lanes of traffic (and then back across another four) is a fairly scary notion for anyone.
And so I wanted to voice my concern for the apparent lack of any real provision for cyclists in the current plans, and to urge with the others for these to be reconsidered as soon as possible to solve this problem.
