Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:16 August 2007

Too many tenants and leaseholders have suffered from late work

•I READ your article on the bungled repairs on the Whittington estate (Bungling contracts double estate’s bill, August 2) with alarm.
It seems clear that repairs and capital works on Camden Council estates have over the years been handled badly. The housing scrutiny committee, which I chair, recently heard about a similar case in Kilburn and we have identified poor repairs and capital works as one of the most pressing problems facing our borough. Too many Camden tenants and leaseholders have suffered from badly carried out, late and expensive work. It is disruptive and distressing. For leaseholders, it is often far too expensive as well. This has been going on for years and must stop.
The new administration and the executive member for housing have shown themselves eager to address these problems, which is very welcome. However, the problems are deep rooted and have been around for years. The committee has launched an investigation into repairs and capital works, starting at our meeting on October 24 at the Town Hall at 7.30pm. I would encourage residents with experience of these problems to attend the meeting and offer their views.
I am determined that we should stop the repairs problem making the lives of many of Camden’s tenants and leaseholders a misery. I hope that my committee’s investigation – which will lead to concrete recommendations – will start that process.
