Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:16 August 2007

Let’s keep Stables unique

GRAHAM Coxon is right when he states that Camden must not lose its edginess, (Mediocre, hideous… August 2) but it’s not just famous guitarists who think that the Stables Market plans are hitting the wrong note.
As a regular shopper there for over 19 years and having lived opposite for the last three, I’ve seen it grow, change in places, but still retain the eclectic mix of shops and stalls and entertainment.
Additions like the excellent and well-run Proud Galleries provide an extra dimension.
It is therefore sad to see the ‘developers’ of the Stables Market wanting to undermine so readily what makes Camden different.
I’ve heard that they even want to clear out the traders months before they need to.
Could it be to try and replace them with high street retailers that might pay top dollar for a site in the market?
I have more respect for those who do make a stand.
Camden Council could also do more – from the very top there has been too little recognition of its uniqueness and the support this needs. The market, the music, its history and people all combine – chipping away at one risks losing all.
The developers of the Stables should take note. Bond Street already exists.
Why create another one here?
