Gunner girls shooting for england at world cup

NINE Arsenal Ladies will fly the flag for north London next month after being named in the England squad to play in the Women’s World Cup.
Speaking at a special squad announcement on Wednesday, England manager Hope Powell listed eight of the Gunners’ Quadruple winning side plus their captain Faye White in her team of 21 players to represent England in China. Teenage striker Lianne Sanderson and defender Anita Asante join Euro 2005 veterans and Arsenal colleagues Faye White, Katie Chapman, Mary Phillip, Alex Scott, Kelly Smith, Rachel Yankey and Karen Carney in the line-up. At 19, Sanderson is one of the youngest players in the line-up and Powell praised the goal hungry striker, capped just six times for the seniors, for her determination to make it to the biggest tournament in the women’s game. She told the New Journal: “It’s a real opportunity for her and she has worked really hard to put herself in the frame, she is a natural goalscorer and brings something different.” England jet out to China on August 19 to prepare for the tournament proper, which kicks off on September 10th when Powell’s side face Japan before further group games against Argentina and world champions Germany.
