Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:9 August 2007

Shallow politics can be the springboard to a fiasco

• CONCERNING Dan Carrier’s article (Heat could win back swimmers who have gone cold on the lido, August 2), just some six years ago the Corporation of London conducted the Parliament Hill Lido Public Consultation and published its findings from 261 questionnaires roughly half male and half female respondents and 49 per cent daily swimmers.
Sadly the respondents were largely ignored. Some 71 per cent opposed the pool being made shallow, so they made it shallower. A total of 83 per cent of swimmers said they would use the lido outside the summer season if it were to be heated, so they created an uninsulated and unheated pool.
An amazing 78 per cent wanted the low-level springboard to be retained.
So it was deemed unsafe and removed. If the Heritage Lottery Fund is now to be approached with a begging bowl under the Parks for People programme it may care to ask about the September 2001 survey and then keep its purse closed.
To claim the heating of the lido is impossible because boxes for pool covers cannot be created is indicative that lido management ‘visionaries’ have lost the plot totally.
The next local pool fiasco now seems to be about to arrive in the Prince of Wales Road. Another listed building where public consultation seems to count for little. Why are the architects involved, for example, insisting on pushing for mixed showers and changing facility of a kind that nobody seems to want? (I don’t bathe in front of my husband, August 2.).
