Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published:9 August 2007

Changing rooms will offer sport centre a flexible mix

• SWIMMERS and other centre users will not have to shower or change in front of someone of the opposite sex at Kentish Town sports centre when it reopens after its £25 million refurbishment (Letters, I don’t bathe in front of my husband, August 2).
Our current plans for pool changing show completely separate male and female shower facilities, a mixture of individual, two person and family cubicles and, when not used by schools and clubs, four single sex group shower and changing rooms.
There are also public showers for swimmers to use when they enter and exit the pools and separate male and female change and shower facilities on the first floor for studio and fitness gym users.
This flexible mix is designed to accommodate the widest possible use for the refurbished centre and is a tried and tested model throughout London.
We know the changing rooms are important to people. When we consulted on the refurbishment earlier this year, 46 per cent of people said they wanted individual cubicle changing and 50 per cent said they preferred separate male and female open plan changing.
The current design, which uses Sport England guidance for indoor pool changing facilities, is a mixture of the two. We want to encourage more people to use our leisure facilities and live more active lives so I hope this reassures everyone who has been concerned.
