Award for park transformation

THE miraculous transformation of a Camden Town park from a haven for drug addicts into a safe, well-loved public garden has been recognised with a Civic Trust Green Flag award.
Friends of St Martin’s Gardens are celebrating winning the coveted title following a long programme of improvements completed last year.
A spokesman said: “Improvements to the park have reduced anti-social behaviour, improved the park’s biodiversity and provided an area for community events.”
Two other Camden parks – Waterlow in Highgate and Russell Square Gardens in Bloomsbury – were also awarded the Green Flag, winning a place among the country’s top parks and open spaces.
Culture chief councillor Flick Rea said: “I’m delighted we’ve been awarded three Green Flags this year, particularly for two smaller parks.
“Russell Square Gardens has been restored to its former elegance and is one of London’s most popular squares and the transformation of St Martin’s Gardens is outstanding.”
