Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 2nd August 2007

We need a fair and open competition

GIVEN the difficulties some parents have in finding a good school for their children, there is no doubt more school spaces are needed. Yet a clear analysis of where the largest need currently is and where it will be in future years has still not been carried out.
Despite the growing need for school places in the south of the borough and strong demands from parents for a school in the area, options for building a school there in the near future have not been consulted upon.
As to whether residents favour a city academy and, if so, whether it should be run by UCL, the Church of England or some other organisation, this was not even put to parents during the recent “consultation”. The full implications for other schools and local control were not explained.
This decision also flies in the face of points made by parents – many asked for a Church of England school and others asked for a community school. We could have a fair and open competition on the issue but instead we are to get a UCL-run school negotiated for behind closed doors.
At last week’s executive meeting, I argued that two smaller neighbourhood schools would be better than one, and called for a fair and open competition. Once again, I urge the executive to reconsider.
Cllr Maya de Souza
Green, Highgate ward
