Camden New Journal - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 2nd August 2007

Other work threatened

MAY I make a point about the controversy surrounding the proposal for a new secondary school in Camden?
Those who threaten Camden’s ability to meet the Building Schools for the Future timetable by demanding protracted consultation, open competition or a different site for the new school do not only endanger the whole project for the new school. They also endanger the associated programme of improvements for Camden’s existing schools.
It is of particular concern to me as a member of the Bengali community that the enlargement and improvement of South Camden Community School should go ahead as quickly as possible. Many children of Bengali families are pupils at South Camden. The council’s plan includes provision of two new forms of entry at South Camden and substantial improvements to the school.
Of course, it would be wonderful if a new school could be provided at long last south of the Euston Road, but no one has yet managed to find a suitable site. Camden Council recognises there is still a continuing need for a new school in the south of the borough and will go on trying every possible way of meeting that need.
Meanwhile, the standard of education and outcomes at the borough's most southerly existing secondary school must take priority.
Cllr Faruque Ansari
Lib Dem, Kentish Town
